Tesla VIN Decoder
The VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) is used by vehicle makers to uniquely identify a vehicle. The first 3 characters are assigned to each manufacturer. The rest of the characters are assigned by the manufacturer and often change over different models and years.

What do Tesla VIN characters mean?
- Characters 1–3 identify the manufacturer. For example,
LRWidentifies Tesla vehicles manufactured in China. - Character 4 identifies the model; characters 5–8 describe attributes such as body type, restraints and powertrain.
- Character 9 is the check-digit position. Character 10 identifies the model year; for example,
Tmaps to 2026 in this decoder. - Character 11 identifies the manufacturing plant. The final six characters are the serial number.
Supported models and limitations
The decoder includes mappings for Model S, Model 3, Model X, Model Y, Cybertruck, Roadster and Semi. Its current model-year table covers 2014–2027. Coverage varies by model and year; a model appearing in the list does not mean every configuration can be decoded.
Unknown codes are displayed as “Unknown.” Tesla can change its encoding, and this tool does not verify a vehicle’s history, check-digit validity or exact installed equipment. Confirm important specifications using the vehicle’s documentation.
